What is Endodontics and why do I need it?

Endodontics is the specialty within Dentistry that deals with the treatment and prevention of diseases of the dental pulp and the supporting structure of the tooth. Endodontic treatment is often referred to as root canal treatment and is carried out when the nerve inside the tooth becomes inflamed or infected. The root canals within the tooth are located and cleaned out to remove all dead and infected material and then they are filled to seal up the tooth.

Alyn Morgan - Specialist Endodontist

Alyn qualified from Leeds Dental Institute in 1995. After a number of years in general dental practice he undertook postgraduate training in Endodontics at the Eastman Dental Institute and he was awarded an MSc with Distinction in 2009. He was admitted to the GDC Specialist List in Endodontics in 2013.

He was previously the Deputy Director of Endodontic CPD at the Eastman and is currently a Senior Clinical Teaching Fellow and Head of Endodontic teaching at Leeds Dental Institute. He is President-elect of the British Endodontic Society.

Alyn has undertaken well over 100 hands on teaching days for General Dental Practitioners, as well as regularly speaking at national and international conferences. He has had numerous articles published in the dental press and wrote the chapter on Managing Endodontic Emergencies in the British Endodontic Society Guidelines to Good Endodontic Practice.

Omid Heidarifar – Specialist in Endodontics

Omid graduated as a dentist from Queen’s University Belfast in 2017, where he was awarded first place in the Final Year Case Presentation. Since then, he has worked in a variety of dental practices across Yorkshire. He has achieved Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery (MFDS) and became a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow. In 2021, Omid was accepted into the highly competitive Doctorate in Dental Science (DDSc) programme at the University of Liverpool, specialising in Endodontics (root canal treatment).

He completed three years of intensive clinical training and passed the Membership in Endodontics examination (MEndo RCSEd) with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2024. Omid also completed his doctorate on the restoration of endodontically treated teeth. Omid has presented at both national and international dental conferences and is an active member of the British Endodontic Society.  His work has been published in several dental journals.  He teaches fellow dental surgeons about endodontic treatment.

Omid has gained extensive experience through a range of roles in both dental practices and hospitals, managing complex endodontic cases such as root resorption, sclerosed and curved root canals, open apices, intricate anatomical challenges, dental trauma, instrument removal and bypassing, post removal, perforation repair, re-treatment and apical microsurgery.  His approach centres on providing the highest standard of care while ensuring patient comfort and minimising anxiety.
